Agriculture at Mamiwata Ecovillage: back to its origins

Mamiwata Eco Village is also following in the footsteps of the first settlers on this island, who brought viticulture to Cape Verde. The steep slopes are cultivated in terraces, the vines come from the island of Fogo and are propagated true to the roots.

This is how the circle is to be closed: from the island where it all began, via the only island where viticulture still exists today, back to its origins. However, monoculture, as it was ordered in the 17th century, is not practised in Mamiwata. Here, the vines are allowed to grow in happy community with sweet potatoes at their feet and above ground with tomatoes and various endemic herbs. The 100% organically produced grapes are then processed just as naturally into wine, jam and sultanas.
